10 Grain Porridge for Longevity

10-Grain Porridge is a simple recipe that is well loved by many Chinese people who care about well-being and longevity. This one is my variation of with a Chinese medicinal twist and a couple of superfoods. The ingredients are food substances that are frequently used in Chinese soups.

Benefits of 10-Grain Porridge

There are 10 wholesome ingredients in this recipe. They are highly nutritious packed with minerals and vitamins such as calcium, vitamin E, B1, B2, B3. It is high in fibre and low in index. It is helpful with bowel movement, blood sugar and triglyceride levels. B complex vitamins benefit metabolism and help keep off excess fat. Lotus seeds and job’s tears (芡实) are Chinese medicinals that boost the digestive system. Black beans, black dates and goji berries are blood, skin and hair tonics. Chia seeds are high in protein, fibre and Omega 3 and may reduce inflammation, insulin resistance and belly fat.

Ingredients:

  • Brown rice(红米)                       1/4 cup
  • Black glutinous rice (黑糯米)       1/2 cup
  • Oats(燕麦)                                   1/4 cup
  • Barley(薏以仁)                            1 Tbsp
  • Lotus seed(蓮子)                        1 Tbsp
  • Job’s tear(芡实)                          1 Tbsp
  • Black bean(黑豆)                        1 Tbsp
  • Black date (黑枣)                        5 pieces
  • Chia seeds(奇亚籽)                     1 Tbsp
  • Goji berries(枸杞子)                   20 pieces
  • Water                                                  1.5 litres
  • Rock sugar                                         1/4 cup

Cooking Instructions

Boil 2 litres of water in a pot. Put all ingredients into the pot. Bring to boil and then simmer for an hour or until all ingredients are soft. Add rock sugar or brown sugar to taste.

Serve 2-4
